The Seminar for
Enterprise Architecture Implementation and Management
Enabling the Zachman Framework and Managing Change
Toronto, October 6-8, 2008
Enterprise Architecture is a concept that can often be misinterpreted by both corporate and Information Technology (IT) business functions. Enterprise Architecture is about dealing with complexity and change and relate to IT, in the sense that IT can be one of the tools that an organization leverages to manage change effectively. The framework for enterprise architecture, "The Zachman Framework TM”, focuses on the knowledge base of a company. This knowledge base is needed to lead and manage the business, but even more important is that these descriptions actually form the basis for change. Enterprise Architecture provides the "raw material" to be able to further develop and design firms for flexibility, integration, reusability and interoperability.
Day one:
The Seminar will give you everything you need to make it possible to begin an Enterprise Architecture in your organization. The first day will provide best practices in managing the human, process, and technology sides of change. It will also cover the purpose and benefits of Enterprise Architecture. Samuel Holcman and Merril Mascarenhas will lead Day one.
Day two and three:
The focus will be on implementation strategies and activities that result in a concrete action plan with clear step how to implement Enterprise Architecture in your organization. Samuel Holcman will lead Day two and Day three.
Detailed Overview/Outline
As technology extends its reach into every facet of the enterprise, information practitioners recognize the growing importance of enterprise architecture to the continued success and growth of the organization. Enterprise architecture shows the business as it is today, depicts it as it would like to be in the future, and provides a “blueprint” for getting there. The Zachman framework, authored by John Zachman, draws upon the discipline of classical architecture/construction and engineering/manufacturing to establish a common vocabulary and set of perspectives - a framework – for defining and describing today’s complex enterprise systems. It is a logical structure for classifying and organizing those elements of an enterprise that are significant to both the management of the enterprise and the development of its information systems. Since its first publication in 1987, the Zachman framework for information systems architecture has evolved and become the model around which major organizations worldwide view and communicate their enterprise information infrastructure. In this Seminar you will obtain an understanding of how to implement enterprise architecture in your organization. We move you from theory to action and implementation – the practice of Enterprise Architecture.

Seminar Overview
In a framework for information systems architecture, John Zachman writes, “To keep the business from disintegrating, the concept of information systems architecture is becoming less of an option and more of a necessity for establishing some order and control in the investment of information system resources.” The Seminar for Enterprise Architecture Implementation and Management - Enabling the Zachman Framework and Managing Change provides what you need to make enterprise architecture a reality for your organization:
- The Seminar begins with the necessary foundation information on the concepts and issues of enterprise architecture.
- It proceeds with an understanding of the Zachman framework from a practitioner point of view, as a tool for understanding and classifying the complex requirements of today’s enterprise.
- Days 2 and 3 focus on implementation strategies and activities that will result in an actual implementation plan and work breakdown structure that an organization can execute to develop and Enterprise Architecture.
More Than Theory
Courses and Seminars are available that discuss the theory of Enterprise Architecture, provide methodology overviews, and describe the importance of enterprise architecture, and define the issues to be addressed. What makes The Seminar for Enterprise Architecture Implementation and Management - Enabling the Zachman Framework and Managing Change unique is that it will take you to the next level of competence; you will learn what to do, how to do it, and how long it will take. In addition to understanding the concepts and issues, this Seminar includes:
- How to develop and manage an enterprise architecture – using the Zachman framework from a practitioner point of view.
- What needs to be done - The Quick Start Methodology and Implementation Plan – the most widely used Enterprise Architecture Methodology in use today.
- The timeframe required to implement an enterprise architecture plan – Your Working Plan.
- Actual implementation experiences using this Methodology, from some of the worlds largest and most complex organizations – for practitioners from practitioners.
Yes, at the end of the Seminar, you will leave with a plan for getting a quick start in implementing an Enterprise Architecture, and showing measurable results! Other approaches have documented the need for a year or more to begin development of an Enterprise Architecture. The Quick Start Methodology TM for Enterprise Architecture reduces that time because it provides a tool by which all participants can view the enterprise from their own perspectives and easily understand how their roles impact, or are impacted by, others. The skills acquired - and the plan developed - from this Seminar provide the techniques and enterprise architectural “blueprint” for defining and implementing initiatives, projects, and systems that encompass the strategic intent of the enterprise and business. This architecture aligns the activities of the information systems organization with the mission, goals, and strategic intent of the business. From this foundation, attendees can profitably pursue techniques and approaches that will directly benefit the enterprise and the business. This seminar is essential for information professionals, and business unit and division managers and supervisors, with responsibility or involvement in directing the resources used for implementing information related programs, that will lead the enterprise into the next century.
